Edward Turner Blue Plaque Event

Chief Designer: Edward Turner

A blue plaque has been unveiled in Southwark to the designer
of the most iconic British motorbike ever, the Triumph.

Edward Turner first started designing and building motorbikes
in workshops in Peckham in the 1920s.

Now, as part of the Southwark blue plaques scheme, run by Southwark Council, his contribution to the world of motorbike design has been officially recognised.

A plaque was unveiled by his son, also called Edward Turner,
on Sunday October 25 at 8 Philip Walk in Peckham,
where Edward Turner (Snr) lived in the early 1920s.

Edward Turner was voted for by the residents of Southwark as one of the ten most deserving recipients of a blue plaque in 2007. Among others voted for in that year's competition were Sir Henry Cooper, John Harvard and Anne Shelton.

Cllr Nick Stanton, leader of Southwark Council, said:
"Our blue plaques reveal an amazing richness of history throughout Southwark. Edward Turner is a great example of the wealth of important figures that we're able to honour in this way, and I hope this plaque will remind people for years to come that the man responsible for a truly iconic motorbike lived and worked in this borough.

"Stephen Humphrey, Southwark Council archivist, said:
"Edward Turner was a Southwark boy through and through, and it was here in Peckham where he first started and then developed his career in motorbike design, a career that was to make a name for him across the globe. It was at his own firm, Chepstow Motors, based on Peckham Road, where he built his first motorcycle, and later he went on to design such classics as the Ariel Square Four, the Triumph Speed Twin, and the Triumph Bonneville.

"Notes:

The Southwark blue plaques scheme is run by Southwark Council and is a joint initiative of the council, Southwark News and the Southwark Heritage Association

Edward Turner:

Born at 32 Bronti Place, Walworth and later lived at 87 Rye Hill Park. He was the managing director of Triumph Motorcycles, achieving great commercial success. He designed the Triumph Tiger motorcycles in 1936,
the Triumph Twin Speed of 1937,
the Triumph Thunderbird and
the Triumph Bonneville,
all of which have a world wide following.

A Triumph Millenium 900 by Vicente Design

Triumph Millenium 900 by Vicente Design - The Triumph Hurricane brought up to date
Most of you are familiar with the Triumph Hurricane X75 designed by Craig Vetter. It’s a classic with 3 upswept pipes and red orange bodywork. Jean François Vicente, who we saw before when we highlighted some of his classic cafe work, did a custom he calls the Millenium 900. A customer wanted him to build a modern version of the Hurricane using a Triumph 900 Adventurer as the starting point and what you see is the result, a beautiful recreation of the Craig Vetter design, updated with modern hardware and technology.
The composite body looks very much like the original, he made custom stainless pipes in the original style, the forks are from a Honda Valkyrie, the headlight from a Yamaha Fazer 600, Yamaha MT01 handlebars and custom aluminum housings for the stock gauges top it off. The whole project is really well done.

Jean has moved to a new website and now works designing a wide range of projects for his clients. He sent me a note a few weeks ago to let me know he has a lot more more photos of his work online and while looking through them this one really jumped out. I noticed, too, that Luca Bar pointed to his Sportster Scrambler in a comment on a recent post, it’s another nice bit of work.
Jean’s site is definitely worth checking out, his Sportster cafe in the Egli Vincent style is another beauty and breaks away from the more common Sportster customs. I could link to many more of his bikes, but it’s probably easier if you look over the site on your own. I think you’ll like what you see.

Triumph Hurricane X75 - an original for comparison

Manufacturer: Triumph
Production: 1972 and 1973
Engine: 750 cc air cooled transverse triple
Power: 58 bhp @ 7250 rpm
The Triumph X-75 Hurricane is a British motorcycle that was the first of a new breed of limited production 'factory specials'. Commissioned by BSA's USA distributor, the X-75 was designed by fairing specialist Craig Vetter. Vetter built his design on the then newly released BSA Rocket3's 750cc three cylinder engine. It was ultimately released as a Triumph model in 1973 after BSA closed its doors in late 1972. It had lowered gearing and a distinctive triple exhaust on the right-hand side.

USA-lex...

Subject: carburateur

Hoi Lex,
Nog steeds lekker in de USA ?
Jij weet m.i. alles ,

Hope this helps,
Lex

PS

Zo gezegd zo gedaan...
Het weer was een kadootje!
Prachtig zonnig & lekker warm...

"Brommers kieken"...

VERWELKOMD !

Daarna gingen wij binnendoor
terug via Oud Maarssen

Onze Nestor, Dr.Tiger Roelofski,
kwam vast te laat thuis, :)

want de brug stond immers open...
(Die dag ca.75 km gereden).
